A list last month was received by  14,000 households in the town of 30,000 and near by  area expressing, why Leamington  with 200 unique shops is a better place to shop than southeast Michigan.

This is result of a marketing campaign by Canadian shoppers to keep Canadian customers from crossing the border.

Quite a number of metro Detroit residents dislike the ad as this will hurt the Detroit and United states.

"I don't know if this is somebody's idea of a joke, but I don't find it very amusing," said Dennis McLellan, 55, of Sterling Heights, whose mother received the ad at her Leamington home. "I have relatives there and here. When I talked to all of them, they were all offended by this."

The ad's creator said it was all in good fun, but some in southeast Michigan aren't laughing.

Lee-Anne Setterington ( who was is a born Canadian but has been living in united states for past 30 years )  says “That wasn't the intent , she was stunned that some people would consider the list an offensive political statement”.

Setterington, who volunteered to do the list for the business association, said it was meant to drive patrons to Leamington's downtown.

"It was never meant this way, because we're neighbors," she adds.

“We're facing the same issues they are in the States. We're very much connected.”

Leamington radio stations aired quite similar ad, but it was removed after some suggested it might not be liked by Americans.

Carolyn Artman, media relations manager for the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, says “ her group has launched ad campaigns in a number of Canadian cities to pull shoppers across the border. The ads have highlighted the positives in this country rather than the negatives in the other. ”

"We try to have fun and be edgy too, I can understand they want to keep people over there. Hopefully we can have a healthy competition." Says Artman.

Melanie Davis, president of the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce, says “while business associations always try to help members, they can do that more effectively by complimenting themselves instead of criticizing others.”

"You're going to try to do whatever you can to boost sales, particularly around the holiday season," Davis adds. "I would never think of doing that at the expense of another community. I would like to think that I could come up with some reasons to shop somewhere without having to take potshots at another community."
